How to Make Healthy Versions of Your Fave Junk Foods. Part 2: Ice Cream!

So you eat healthily 99% of the time - but sometimes you just can't resist a little treat.

This is the second part in my series entitled 'How to Make Healthy Versions of Your Fave Junk Foods'. (If you missed part one, the link is at the bottom of this post). In the upcoming weeks I'm going to give you some suggestions for making healthier versions of foods that aren't usually great for you.

As the weather is warming up and summer is on its way, your thoughts might be turning to ice cream. However, store-bought gelato can be full of sugar, fat and preservatives so I'm going to show you how to make your own, nutritious ice creams at home (I know it sounds like an oxymoron but yes, you really can make nutritious ice cream!)

A good, low-fat alternative to ice cream is a fruit sorbet. However, sorbet is traditionally made with a lot of sugar and/or sweetener, so our version is going to eliminate that and just focus on the fruit.


This recipe is so ridiculously simple and is guaranteed to cool you down during the long hot summer days ahead.

1. Choose the fruits(s) you would like to use to make your sorbet. Good choices include raspberries, strawberries, mango, peach or papaya.

2. Chop your fruit into small chunks and put into a blender with some natural (plain) yoghurt.

3. Blend until almost smooth – a few fruity chunks are good.

4. Decant into a freezer-friendly container and freeze for a few hours.

5. It may turn rock hard so when you're ready to eat it, remove from the freezer and leave for 10-15 minutes or until it has softened enough to get your spoon into!

This is so refreshing on a hot summer's day and tastes amazing – almost like the real thing!
