Fitness Shopping List: Three Best Post-Workout Foods on the Market

Here are some of the most beneficial snacks I've found to help your body recover after exercise.

This is not a sponsored post - the brands I've mentioned are simply the ones I like to use because they taste the best or I find them most effective.

1. Protein Bars

After a workout, it's important to replenish your body's stores of protein, preferably within an hour. If you're in a rush or don't have time to cook a meal, these bars are a quick and easy way to get your protein fix. Be careful not to buy something just labelled 'energy bar' as this will be full of simple carbs and sugar. My favourite high-protein bars are by Trek. They are completely natural, contain 10g of protein per 55g bar, are gluten, wheat and dairy free and 100% vegan. Trek also do flapjacks, which I find are great for a mid-morning boost.

2. Coconut Water

Known as nature's sports drink, coconut water is a great way to rehydrate your body both during and after a hard workout. It's full of electrolytes which help to maintain the body's fluid balance. An 8-ounce (225ml) serving of coconut water contains 470 mg of potassium – more than a medium banana and 15 times more than Powerade. My favourite brand of coconut water is Innocent. I find that it's smoother, more palatable and easier to drink on its own than Vita Coco, which I mainly just add to smoothies.

3. Half a Sandwich

Peanut butter and banana on wholewheat bread will provide you with protein which will help you build muscle, and complex carbohydrates to restore your energy. I recommend buying Sun-Pat peanut spread which is better for you than other peanut butters as it's made with 95% peanuts and doesn't actually contain any butter. If you're not a fan of peanut butter, other high-protein sandwich options include tuna, turkey and cheese.
