Five Best Health and Fitness Resources

If you're just beginning your health and fitness journey, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by all the conflicting information out there – or you might not even know where to start looking for reliable advice.

So where do you begin your research? What will give you the best starting point from which to build your knowledge? I've put together five good resources to help you on your way.

1. The Internet
This is probably the richest source of information and the one most people turn to first nowadays. It offers a wealth of health advice – from blogs to websites to e-zines to videos, and much more. Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook are a great way to follow health and fitness accounts and receive up to the minute information in real time. The only downside of the Web is that it's not regulated and anyone can write anything, meaning there's also a plethora of misinformation out there.


2. Books
These are a more reputable source of information because they are generally written by experts. Bookshops always stock a good range of health books, but they can often be expensive. Try looking in second hand bookshops and charity shops. Your local library should also provide a good selection.

3. Magazines
Also generally a reliable source, there are many different health, fitness and nutrition magazines to choose from and they're widely available in supermarkets, bookshops and newsagents. Choose one that's not too 'niche' and caters to the lay person without using jargon or overly complicated language – if you're in the UK I'd recommend Healthy which can be bought in Holland & Barrett for just £1.99.

4. TV/DVDs
Have a look through your TV listings to see if there are any health-related programmes coming up. DVDs, like books, can also be inexpensive if you know where to look for them. Try sites like eBay and Preloved or get down to your local charity shop or car boot sale – you never know, you might even find some old 80s or 90s workout videos (comedy gold!)

5. The Gym
If you have the money, joining a gym or attending a fitness class is the perfect way to meet like-minded strangers – you never know, they might become friends who will support you on your fitness journey. You could also invest in a personal trainer who knows what he/she is talking about and ask them any questions you may have.
