Product Review: Selwyn's Seaweed & Soap!

20:47
Let me tell you a little about seaweed (because if you hadn't realised by now, I can't help lecturing people on food). Seaweed is full of health benefits – it's a potent source of antioxidants and high in fibre, protein, iodine, omega-3 fats, vitamins A, C and D and calcium.

You may have tried 'crispy seaweed' from the Chinese takeaway – which, while delicious, isn't exactly the healthy option because it has been deep fried, is dripping with grease has hardly any nutrients left by the time you eat it.

I enjoy seaweed and its benefits, so I was pleased to receive three packets of the stuff from Selwyn's Seaweed. A family run company, their nori seaweed snacks come from the shores of the Gower Peninsula in Wales and are available in three flavours – honey & sesame, sea salt & vinegar, and coconut & chilli. I'm not ashamed to admit that I ate all three packs in one day. Beware; they are VERY moreish. But at just 14 calories, 11 calories and 12 calories respectively, it didn't exactly hurt my waistline. That's just 37 calories in three packets of seaweed!

The actual seaweed comes in very thin sheets (it doesn't look like the stuff you see at the beach) which have been sprinkled with natural flavourings. My favourite flavour was the coconut & chilli because I thought it was an unusual combination but worked really well. I must have been a little too eager when opening the honey and sesame packet because I ended up with sesame seeds all over my kitchen floor. The seaweed still tasted good; just with fewer seeds on it than there should've been!

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the owners of Selwyn's Seaweed also make soaps and was so happy to receive these three gorgeous bars plus five shell-shaped bath melts to try out. They're all handmade with seaweed from the Welsh coast, which I think is a great idea as seaweed is really good for your skin. I like how the soaps feel almost creamy and give a good lather - they leave your skin feeling soft and smelling delicious. I think they would make a lovely present for someone special. Click here to have a browse: Mazu Seaweed Soap.

  4. Hey Sarah! You need to try them - the coconut and chilli is the nicest in my opinion because the flavours go really well together :)
