Energy balls are extremely popular at the moment in the health and fitness world, and for good reason. Not only are they the perfect pre- or post-workout snack, they're also a convenient way to give yourself a quick energy boost between meals or just whenever you need a little pick-me-up.
However, buying them in the shops can be expensive. Deliciously Ella's energy bites, for instance, retail at £1.99 each and Bounce Balls cost around £1.89 per ball - so it's a lot more cost effective to make your own.
This energy ball recipe is high in protein, healthy fats and quick-release carbs as well as being vegan, gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free. Oh, and it takes about 2-3 minutes to make. Pretty much everyone can enjoy these balls (except nut allergy sufferers) so why not give 'em a go?
Nutty Chocolate Energy Balls
You will need:
50g (1/2 cup) almonds
25g (1/4 cup) walnuts
25g (1/4 cup) cashew nuts
200g medjool dates
1 tbsp raw cacao powder
1 tbsp peanut butter
1 tbsp coconut oil
Desiccated coconut (optional)
Method:
1. Put the almonds, walnuts and cashews into a food processor and blend for 1 minute until the nuts have turned to crumbs.
2. Meanwhile, remove the stones from the dates.
3. Add the dates, cacao, peanut butter and coconut oil to the food processor and blend for another minute until a sticky dough forms.
4. With your hands, roll the mixture into 12 small balls, each about the size of a golf ball.
5. Roll half the balls in desiccated coconut (if you want to) and store in the fridge until you're ready to eat them.
